Spots, pimples, blemishes, zits ...call them whatever you want, these symptoms of problem skin can be both debilitating and embarrassing for many people. An increasing number of men and women are now developing acne, sometimes for the first time in their lives. As therapists know all too well, it doesn’t matter if you are 15 or 50, spots can strike at any age.
Acne skin, medically known as acne vulgaris, is usually caused by the increased production of sebum, which is secreted by ducts to the surface of the skin. These ducts become blocked and infected with micro-organisms that lead to the formation of small red lumps, blackheads or postholes, which are characteristic features of acne.
