Do you feel you have sensitive skin?
If so you are not alone, as six out of ten women in Ireland feel the same way. In Ireland an increasing number of people are claiming to have sensitive skin types. So what is characterized as sensitive skin exactly?

Experts say ‘sensitive skin is characterized by an excessive reaction to factors which are usually tolerated in normal skin, sensitive skin reddens, tingles, stings or pulls and can experience burning sensations’. Factors which can come into play with sensitive skin include the environment, reactions to certain skin products and hard water. People with sensitive skin can also be prone to uncomfortable condition, atopic eczema. With all the advances in skincare technology it surely its possible to find enough products which compliment sensitive skin without irritating it?

Just a thought....I think when assessing skin type it is important to also consider history, background and past skin care. People usually have 'sensitised' skin as opposed to sensitive skin. People with sensitive skin usually have a parent with sensitive skin, they usually have hayfever and allergies.
Sensitised skin is a reaction to past products used, products that may have been too harsh for them or have been wrong for them.
what do others think?

You have a point, what i consider sensitive skin is when a person's skin is particularly reactive to ingredients in certain products, moreso than average skin, breaks out in rashes easily or other skin problems including sensitivity to temperature, pollution, and other factors not related to beauty products. People who have sensitive skin though are more likely to have trouble finding products to suit, for example certain products containg alcohol can wreak havoc on certain skin types and have no effect on others.

If you have sensitive you have to be extra careful when using beauty products. The most important thing when using any skin product is to check the ingredients and make sure it is dermologically tested, test a patch in the crease of the elbow and leave for 24 hrs to see if there is a reaction, and make sure to keep with products not only suited to sensitive skin but also to your skin type, whether, dry, oily etc.
